Meet the Mamas

Helen and Sara met in college and became fast friends. They bonded over their love of veggie burgers, homemade granola, and weekly yoga classes. Through the years they've remained connected and have worked together planning community events and gardens, organizing wellness retreats and workshops, and navigating through the joys and challenges of motherhood meantwhile in two different countries.

Sara Hartley

Sara Hartley first came upon Biodynamic Agriculture while working at a holistic spa, which sold Weleda and Dr. Hauschka products. She noticed the ingredients included Biodynamically grown herbs and flowers, harvested under certain moons to maintain the highest potency.
Intrigued, her exploration of this soon brought her to interning at a biodynamic vineyard, Ambyth Estate, in California and then to another Demeter certified turmeric and ginger farm in the rainforest of Costa Ricam, Finca Luna Nueva.
After a few years of mentorship and experience of biodynamic-organic practices, working with tropical medicinal and nutritive plants, she developed a christ-conscious focused, regenerative farming internship program for
Finca Luna Nueva and hosted a few dozen interns over a two year time.

During this time and while working at the farm and eco-lodge, Sara and her Costa Rican husband Christian were so humbly introduced to many plant medicine healers, environmental activists, and fabulous teachers in regenerative farming and other life-giving practices. They also noticed the diminishing health among the communities they were living in. Something wasn't adding up- healers, the information, vital food was there but it was out of reach for the average person.
Guided by the great spirit and a combination of all their holistic experiences with teachers and mentors, the two founded an organic food distribution company and health food store, called La Farmacia Organica. Today they offer their local communities and tourists the availability of fresh organic produce and artisan products as well as host educational workshops featuring teachers who share critical information for supporting and nurturing the life-giving sources of the earth and within.

She has developed a 7-week Holistic Gardening Series and teaches gardening and herbal classes to training herbalists, yogis, and the public throughout the year.

As an herbalist and gardener, Helen's main interests include local food and local medicine, herbal folklore, women’s reproductive health, family wellness, companion planting, and lunar agriculture.

Helen balances her time with students in the classroom, yoga studio, and outdoors; working at a farm to table restaurant; doing consulting work for small, earth-centered non-profits, projects, and individuals; gardening and foraging food and medicine, preparing nourishing meals and snacks; and with her family, exploring the fields, woods, and shores of New Hampshire.
